THE MISSION OF THE WILLIAM S. SMITH LIBRARY
The primary mission of the William S. Smith Library is to instruct a diverse student
body, faculty, and staff in accessing and evaluating resources that enhance the associate
level curriculum of South Georgia College. In fulfilling this objective, the library
serves as an instructional unit and as an aid to research. The library actively

by:
- providing ready access to a core collection of information resources and services that
support and augment the classroom experience and promote high levels of student learning
through freedom of inquiry;
- utilizing available and emerging technologies that support and enhance instruction and
information retrieval;
- cultivating an environment that enhances instructional and individual excellence;
- providing service from professional, qualified librarians who are active educators and
faculty members, and from staff who are committed to meeting the needs of students and
faculty;
- supporting the College's off-campus classes at Waycross College and through Distance
Learning;
- continuous planning and assessment, responsiveness, staff development, and technical
assistance to meet user needs;
- collaborating with other units of the College to offer distinctive programs and services
designed to meet the intellectual and cultural needs of the community within the College's
scope of influence;
- cooperating with other System institutions, State agencies, local schools and technical
institutes, and the business community, in sharing physical, human, and information
resources to expand programs available to the citizens of Georgia.
