PSYCHOLOGY RESOURCES

GALILEO Databases (journal and magazine indexes to articles with full text) http://www.galileo.peachnet.edu

Note: If you have Internet access at home, ask us for SGC's password that allows you to connect to these licensed resources from off-campus.

  1. Academic Search Elite at EBSCOhost, as well as Periodical Abstracts Research II at Proquest, have full text, meaning the text of journal articles to print or download. Both these indexes may be limited to retrieve only peer-reviewed/scholarly journal articles, different from popular magazines such as Psychology Today or Newsweek.

  2. Encyclopaedia Britannica Online - This database will supply background essays for many topics you may be researching. Off-campus connect to http://britannica.com

  3. PsycFirst - Indexes journal articles, chapters, books, dissertations and reports on psychology and related fields. ABSTRACTS -- not full text, but citations from here can be checked against the full text in #1 above.

To find articles in Academic Search Elite or Periodical Abs. Research II:

  1. At the GALILEO home page use the left side of your mouse to click on GALILEO Databases, then select General Indexes.

  2. Select the index to be searched by clicking on its blue title.

  3. Click your cursor into the keyword field. Type in your term(s). If you have more than one, put and or or between the words to broaden your search, or to make it more precise. Online Help offers more tips. Try for example:
  4. cognitive and development (simple search)
    child and development
heredity or environment and child development (complex)

The and and or are boolean operators. The and tells the index to find only articles with all the terms connected by and. The or tells it to find articles with either term. Bad results? Check for errors in your typing, or try EBSCO's Natural Language search option instead of keyword.

  5. Click the full text option box if you only want full text (this may leave out valuable citations whose text could be found on SGC's Periodical Area shelves). Hit Enter to begin the search.
  1. You will be shown a list of results/articles about your subject, with most recent articles first. Do not just pick the first, newest one -- evaluate. Scroll through this Results List until you find an article you are interested in. Click on the blue text of its title and a citation with full text below it will appear on the next screen. E-mail, save, or print the article if you wish. Click on Back to go back one screen or Results to return to the list of articles.
