ENGLISH -- LITERARY CRITICISM RESOURCES

Aside from the plentiful book resources (mostly around aisle 10, such as Short Story Criticism or Drama for Students) that you can locate through the online GIL library catalog, we suggest you use these GALILEO and Local Resources databases for literary criticism in electronic form:

The SGC Library has subscribed to certain GaleNet Web databases, available on campus only. On the Library's Web page, click on the "Local Resources" link. Choose CONTEMPORARY AUTHORS, DISCOVERING AUTHORS, DICTIONARY OF LITERARY BIOGRAPHY, EXPLORING POETRY or EXPLORING SHAKESPEARE to access these indexes with full-text. They include literary criticism, bibliographies, and photos of many authors. To search for criticism of a specific novel or short story, use the title search field. Or under the full text approach, you will retrieve a links to your search term(s) and can click on the ones of interest to you. Also scroll down to the bottom of most entries to browse the bibliography of other sources such as the New York Times, which the library has on microfilm. Always search an author's name by last name first, for example, chopin, kate. Click Print at the top of the screen to print a hard copy of the whole article, or (using Netscape) go to File and Print Preview to find a paragraph you need; zoom in and look at the bottom left corner to identify the page number then print from page 5 to page 5, for example, if you only need that one page.

ACADEMIC SEARCH ELITE or PERIODICAL ABSTRACTS RESEARCH II (GALILEO Databases under General Indexes).
Both popular indexes to magazines and journals, these databases selectively provide article text. If you are a current SGC student or faculty member, ask us for the GALILEO password to access these resources from home or off-campus. For example, if you want  criticism of Faulkner's works without book reviews, you can search faulkner, william not review with the full-text option checked and will retrieve over seventy-six citations in ASE. Click one of the blue article titles, examine the summary, then scroll down to the full text of the journal article.

ENCYCLOPEDIA BRITANNICA ONLINE (GALILEO Databases / Reference Sources/ EB) (or off-campus, britannica.com)
If you need a basic introduction to an author's life and work, this is a simple starting point.

MASTERPLOTS in CD-ROM format is on computers in the Library’s Reference Area. Go to the Start button, then Programs, choose Library CD Server, then Masterplots 1999, then Masterplots. "Search by Title" is the default option. The library also owns Masterplots in print. See GIL for call numbers.

The INTERNET PUBLIC LIBRARY web site includes some author and literary criticism sections online.

CURRENT BIOGRAPHY is another library-leased web resource that will supply basic information on famous authors dating from 1940 to the present (such as William Faulkner who died in 1962). You will find CB under "Local Resources" on the SGC Library home page.

For help citing these databases on a "Works Cited" page of your paper, see a separate MLA citation guide online on our home page.

REMEMBER THAT THESE RESOURCES ARE HERE TO HELP YOU WITH YOUR RESEARCH BUT THEY DO NOT REPLACE ORIGINAL THINKING. PUT YOUR OWN CRITICAL THOUGHTS INTO YOUR PAPER. YOUR PROFESSOR WILL NOT WANT TO READ THE SAME THEMES EVERY SEMESTER, SO DO NOT PLAIGARIZE.
